This is the start of my new memory sketches I call "Drive By". I am stuck in L.A traffic for an hour each morning. So I have turned my L.A traffic frustration in to drawing joy. I listen to Howard Stern and watch people drive by.
I've noticed on my daily commute on the 405..that whenever I look over at people driving, that 4 out of 10 times they are picking their noses.
I thought about mounting a camera in my car and documenting the phenomenon, and then publishing them in a coffee table book, called "California Gold Diggers."
...but I dunno what the legalities are of that would be. lol
Anyways.. I really enjoy your blog Stephen!! It's a part of my daily routine!!
That's a great idea. Like Gary said I notice people picking their noses too. And women putting on their makeup... Anyways cool drive by guy! Can't wait to see more of these!
so when you look at the person, you determine what kind of character they are and kind of turn them into basic shape? i'm trying to set my mind so i can remember :)(hard for me to remember) i thinkin to set it like this : - what kind of character or emotion :bored, sad, mad, etc - what kind of shape : big head, small, long, etc then i'm stuck :D oh.. i hope i don't ask to much .. just trying to learn :D
by the way, i remember my friend once had an idea to take picture of people behind the wheel.. coz it's pretty interesting to see.. but too bad we're afraid that the people will get mad ..:P
I have thought of doing a photo series of people in their cars. Some folks seem like they are in their own little bubble of privacy....even though they are surrounded by windows. ?!?!?!? I have witnessed some crazy goings ons.
I only get quick looks, but it is the first impression you get that you need to capture. Ask yourself, What sticks out the most? fat, thin?,hair,no hair?big nose?, small nose? ect..
Stephen Silver was born in London, England on August 30th 1972. Aspiring to be a
professional artist his whole life and knowing drawing would be his vocation, Silver got
his professional start in 1992 drawing caricatures in amusement parks. In 1993 he went
on to establish his own illustration company called Silvertoons. By 1997 Silver was
hired by Warner Bros. Television Animation as a character designer, and has been
working in the animation industry ever since.
He has worked as Character Designer and Supervisor for Disney Television Animation,
Sony Feature Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, designing characters such as
"Kim Possible", "Danny Phantom" and Kevin Smith's "Clerks" the animated series, to
name a few. Silver is the author and artist of seven self-published books on the art of
sketching, caricature and life drawing. In addition to working freelance full time, he also
teaches an online character design course at schoolism.com. Silver names three treasures to success
in life that give him what it takes to keep on drawing: passion, desire and determination.
