Do It for yourself

For many years as an artist I struggled with the fact that I didn’t draw as well as my influences, or other artists that I thought had superior talent. I was comparing myself to these artists which caused this competition within my head because my work was not as good as theirs. I questioned my level of talent, which would cause me frustration. I get emails from people who struggle with this all the time, they too create their own competition and frustration.

Through out the years I have learned to be inspired by others work and not intimidated by it. My philosophy is that I do not have to be the best, I just have to do my best.

Wallace Wattles, had a great quote he said, “do not be competitive, be creative.” Don't waste your time looking at what the competition is doing, create something new. Look at your goals, your interests, your abilities, not the goals, interests, and abilities of others. Do it for yourself!

Really inspiring words! I too am one of those people who feel that my skill is not up to par with others whom I admire. I just look at their work and try to learn from what they do and hopefully with that I'll improve. You're definitely one of those people who continue to inspire me. Cheers!

Interesting words. I too can be very critical of my own work. I know I'm far from the best, but I can often be so embarrassed of this fact that I'll refuse to show any of my work in public.
Thanks for all your help in the past.

Heh, i've fallen into that trap more times than i can count. You can quickly lose yourself in that way of thinking, and soon forget altogether what the heck you wanted to do in the first place. I appreciate you taking the time and addressing these things on your blog.

Right on. I recently started a creative project a year ago, and it has take me a full year to learn this valuable lesson. I'm now having a lot more fun with it, and it's a better product too.

I can definitely relate to that!! I used to suffer sever anxiety attacks as a result. I even ended up in the emergency room a couple of times. Not fun.

Now I'm glad to hear these words from you, Steve. Thanks for the inspiration (followed by my perspiration!). :0)

To hear someone at your level of accomplishment acknowledge past personal struggles with the craft is pretty humbling. The honesty is refreshing and a comfort to the rest of us struggling to make it.

Cheers Mr. S, thank you.

Hey Stephen,
Thanks for posting this, it's very easy to loose sight of personal goals when looking at and comparing yourself to others work.

Brian Tracy said something similar in his book on Goals. In a nutshell he said everyone learned a skill (or skills) for them to be where they are today. So what you really want to do is learn those skills. That helped me a lot then and now because no one starts out great.
