FREE BOOK GIVEAWAY

Passion for Life is my latest book, giving insight into my philosophies in life drawing and life itself. With over 200 figure drawings in many different styles and techniques, Passion for Life will inspire and give you a look into the art of life drawing with a whole new perspective never seen before. Passion for life, and all it contains is an insightful book, not just for the drawings, but the message it sends. The quotes, and inspirational thoughts, are not just for artists, but for anyone who aspires to be happy, content and productive.
What I would like to do again is giveaway 2 free copies. I have found that many artists are working but not following their real passion, and have the desire to do something different with their art other than what it is they are actually doing. So I ask this question?
If you woke up tomorrow and had the opportunity to be doing that one special thing you really want to be doing, what would it be?
All you have to do is leave a comment on the post and put your website or blog URL so people can see what you do. There is no right or wrong, on Monday, June 29th I will do a live video post where I will place everyone's name in a bowl and pick the two winners .
And if you can't wait, you can order my book directly @ http://silvertoons.com/store.html or click on the title. All books come signed with an original sketch of course.
Good luck!

Ive been on a long journey trying to get where I want to be and I keep hitting brick walls (cant finish school now and currently not working). It doesnt matter how big or small the studio, ill be happy being able to do what I love for a living. Ill get there. Im closer than Ive ever been.

Thank you for your inspirational work and thoughts, Stephen.

Hi Stephen, I don't know what the magic words are to get a book, but I certainly would use it, learn from it, and appreciate it.

I've been a working professional cartoonist for the last 20 years, but I'm completely self-taught, and have learned almost everything I know about cartooning and drawing from books. I've never had a mentor, and have always had to try and figure it out for myself, and books have always been a good guide. And since I doubt I'll have the opportunity to hang over your shoulder watching you draw any time soon, your book would be the next best thing to learning your thoughts, techniques, and methods to creating.

And if the above doesn't work, how about, "Ooh, ooh!! Pick Me! Pick Me! ; )

Be an animal character designer for animation TV series. Only drawing sketches of characters because the sketches are the most important. At the moment I also do coloring, animating, backgrounds etc. but I would like to only do the character to become really good in that.

And only animals because I think too less people focus on animals, at least where I live in the Netherlands. (there is no Disney here). It would be great if even other illustrators hired me because there are animals in the project and they think I'm better at it :)

(I DO like the book with people drawings btw, since it's no reality yet and have to keep improving my people too ;))

As much as I love to draw; the pleasure that I get from drawing is from the feeling that I am learning, improving and problem solving. I've been really lucky to do a variety of artistic work. I love the challenge and creativity of that and want to continue, but in my fantasy... I own a duplex, living upstairs while the downstairs is my studio that I share for free, day and night with a bunch of my immensely talented and under-appreciated artist friends. During the day I walk across the street to the local art high school and teach a couple classes. I come home and work on a different project every week with figure drawing at least once a week (b/c then I could pay a model, instead of waiting for the one place here to do it once a month!). I've gotten to do comics and concept work and other illustration works, but there's so much more that sounds like fun! Designing clothes and toys, doing a mini comic, painting a piece bigger than me, etc. Sculpting maquettes is a burning passion that I've never been paid to do (and thus can't do often), but I'm utterly obsessed with. Travelling occasionally for reference and filling my time with visiting all the museums and filling all of my sketchbooks.

Some of the others have mentioned working for particular companies, and I'm sure that would be new and interesting too, but...I think the greatest adventure is the one you take on your own to discover your own voice (if only we all had the money to DO that).

In the short time I've been alive, I've been very lucky to be able to work for a living while pursuing my creative dreams at night in improv comedy, writing, and drawing... but if I could wake up tomorrow and be doing anything on Earth with my art and writing?

I would be a combination of Neil Gaiman, Paul Pope, and Steve Martin. I would wake up at 6 to go run in Central Park. Afterwards, I would sip green tea while staring at open windows of Final Draft or Scrivener and after finishing at least 10 pages, I would break for lunch and go visit my friends at the UCB Training Center. After a couple of hours or so, I would go home and spend the next few hours sketching and brainstorming ideas for characters or a graphic novel in progress. After that and a nice dinner, I would go meet my friends again and perform a sold-out comedy show a local Manhattan black box theater.

That's the perfect morning for my artistic self.

If i woke up tomorrow morning, and had to choose 1 thing to be doing more than anything else? I would have to say being a head character designer/ concept artists for a major studio (ie blizzard, lucas arts.) Its strange, but i never had much passion for freelance work Ive always been a fan of the whole job hunt process, and making a name for yourself inside a company

Being an art student, i have come to learn and appreciate all types of different art in its various forms, but ever since Ive joined animation as a post secondary education i continue to be passionate about becoming one of those things. albeit a layout artist or prop designer might be an easier and more realistic of choices, i still have a dream and hopefully one day will achieve it.

thank you greatly for this opportunity, and cant wait to check this book out. What an interesting take on life drawing. I know i will give it a shot next time in the studio!

This is a little long winded:

Right now I don't work in the art world. For years I wanted to be a history teacher, but never had luck finding a job after 6 years, so I later transitioned into special ed, got a masters in history but never felt like I was doing what I wanted. My life felt empty and passionless. It wasn't until I started teaching kids how to draw at an after school program, that the possibilities of doing something with art struck me and I reintroduced myself to a love from my childhood.

Throughout elementary, middle, and high school I always drew. I had my own comic strips and everything At some point in high school I even wanted to do something with art and computers, but never followed through and pushed myself toward the teaching field.

Over the last three years I've been trying to develop my skills, but it was a conversation with you at the NY Comic Con in 2009 that really inspired me and encouraged me to move forward. After that I knew that I had found my passion and it was drawing and art. Now I am finally being pulled in a direction. I am slated to go back to school in the fall for a 2nd undergrad degree in 3D animation and digital illustration. Hopefully in a few years I'll be working in the animation industry and eventually be able to do character design and open a private art studio/school where I can teach kids drawing and cartooning basics.

My ONE goal for the past 2 years is to become a freelance illustrator. Not for the money, but for happiness. It took me 30 years to realize what I wanted to do with my life and that is a sad thing, but I can't dwell on the past, or the future, I can only control the present. You have to realize that you get one life. One. Why waste your days renting your mind to anything else?

It is unfortunate that money dictates how we spend each day of our one life. And the things we want most out of life should never adversely affect others or yourself. So I am practical that I have to pair money with my love for illustration so that my dream of being able to be a freelance illustrator will also allow me to also provide a comfortable life for my family.

So every day, the present, I draw in the morning before work, during my lunch break, and when I get home from my regular tech job. I keep a pocket sketchbook with me all the time like a butterfly net to not let those random ideas get away, I catch them in a small thumbnail in meetings, at my desk, etc.

I want to write a story with line art and color for myself and other people every day for the rest of my life.

First of all, the book looks great.

Secondly, I'd be working alongside my colleagues I admire most, working in a very inspiring atmosphere and producing films just for ourselves.
I also inspire to have my 'work' seperated from my 'personal life'. Even though art is my passion, I've found that it is starting to suffocate me. Being able to experience more than art would in turn push me to a whole new level.

I'd love to "theme" places, theme parks, restaurants etc.

Like take some backwater diner and theme it as like a dinosaur hunting outpost, or a library and theme it to feel like some crazy adventurers secret collection.

The type of thing that would make ordinary places totally rock little kids worlds saying things like "I REALLY want to go to the bank with you" because the bank is now themed like a wild west town...

But until that job exists..

I am doing what I want, working with teenagers and helping them out while working on my webcomic as a hobby.

Hi Stephen,

I am at the crossroads these days. For the past 30 years, I have worked with my nose to the grindstone and done everything the old fashioned way, worked way to hard for not much. So, making major life re-assessment at the moment, going back to school and looking for my karma. I want to write and draw comics like, when I was inspires as a kid. I am writing and drawing my way out of this. One way or another, something is coming out of this from me to show my creativity.

Honestly?

Singing. I'm a writer by trade and a creative type by nature, but for all my fancy words and subtle sarcasm I can't really do the one thing I've always wanted to do.

I enjoy writing. Love it, even, as much as I love and admire art, music, and every other kind of media that has shaped my life so far. But secretly -- very secretly -- it still plays second fiddle to that hopeless desire for a voice as powerful and clean as they come.

A pointless fantasy, I guess. And I can't imagine this was quite what you had in mind whenever you originally posed the question, but hey -- you asked. :)

Thanks for the opportunity for honesty.

The thought that one of my works would become a fixture in someone's childhood experience is really a motivation for me. i'd love for kids to connect with my books, and for them to relive their childhood if they encounter it at a later age again.

Just me, my music and my pencils, rocking away all day long. Creating the kind of work that make me smile now when i encounter them elsewere.

And hopefully have enough free time on my hands to still actively try to improve my work.

So, the question is: if I woke up tomorrow and had the opportunity to be doing that one special thing I really want to be doing, what would it be?
Easy.
I would be a comic book artist. But not just any comic artist. I would be an *astronaut dinosaur* artist.
Allow me to explain.
I do not mean that I want to draw comics featuring astronauts or dinosaurs. That would be awesome, sure, and I would be willing to *settle* for that. But my dream, when I was, oh, five years old, was to be (A) an artist, (B) an astronaut, and (C) a dinosaur (a triceratops, to be specific). As I grew older I realized the essential flaw in this dream; dinosaurs have no thumbs. How would I draw? How would I fly the spaceship?
A boy can dream.

After reading so many comments, I realize I'm not too different than most artists here. I feel drawn in so many directions, I hardly know where to focus my passions, though I know where I don't want the bulk of my hours/days/years to end up...time sucked away by the drudgery of an hourly job in retail, with nothing to show for it.

I'd love to draw my own comic strip, doing everything towards making an Eisner-worthy graphic novel...I know I'm here for a purpose, and it's to put something good into the world. That is my passion, though it has long been an ember that i've kept fanning, trying to keep it alive so I can turn it into a flame one day.
