That was a really good talk. I enjoy hearing about your past and the things you did to lead you to where you are now. I never really thought about how much doing parties like that would be both good for your career and your wallet. I wish I knew about that back in the day haha. Its like getting paid to teach yourself to become a better over all artist: speed, likeness and skill level. That would of beat my lawn service when I was younger haha Keep these coming, I enjoy them so much, while I am working on projects I love surfing and listening to stuff like this. Have a great day man. -peace Stephen
Good stuff. I also started out doing caricatures, your advice is solid.
I've often thought it would be great to have someone do a podcast on art and cartooning from the artist's point of view, but I wasn't sure something visual like art could translate well into an audio format. Looks like you are going to prove me wrong. And I'm glad!
Steven, Something that Ive always wondered about when designing a new character or whatever it is that you are designing. Basing your exp on characters, I wonder if you could address something like how you make the design decisions that you do when designing facial features and hands to a character. Like have you got a theory on what makes the character more appealing. For example, the nose that you choose for the character or the eyes and hands. Since those are some of the things I usually notice are what kind of hands did the artist use for that character. Or why did they use that kind of nose, eyes, mouth, etc....Im sure a lot of that is based on just how much you have done caricatures. Just a thought I had and thought Id ask.
thanks man, the aaaaahrtcast kicks ASS!! dig the accent... :P
Stephen Silver was born in London, England on August 30th 1972. Aspiring to be a
professional artist his whole life and knowing drawing would be his vocation, Silver got
his professional start in 1992 drawing caricatures in amusement parks. In 1993 he went
on to establish his own illustration company called Silvertoons. By 1997 Silver was
hired by Warner Bros. Television Animation as a character designer, and has been
working in the animation industry ever since.
He has worked as Character Designer and Supervisor for Disney Television Animation,
Sony Feature Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, designing characters such as
"Kim Possible", "Danny Phantom" and Kevin Smith's "Clerks" the animated series, to
name a few. Silver is the author and artist of seven self-published books on the art of
sketching, caricature and life drawing. In addition to working freelance full time, he also
teaches an online character design course at schoolism.com. Silver names three treasures to success
in life that give him what it takes to keep on drawing: passion, desire and determination.
